The statewide portal, a calendar check, and direct contact with the correct clerk counter in Bluffton: a full Wells County search may need all three. Begin with the statewide public case system for Wells County, Indiana and select the court that received the filing. The chronological record of filings, settings, orders, and results confirms a case status or hearing. The County Clerk keeps the official record. Restricted cases and some document images stay offline, and a Wells County court docket search that uses the three sources in turn covers the case.

Finding Wells Cases in MyCase

Case mode takes one key at a time. Choose a case number, a citation number, or a cross-reference. Name mode wants a last name. You can add a first name, middle name, or birth date; a business name works too. Attorney mode accepts either a name or a bar number. Advanced controls then trim the results to All, Open, or Closed cases. They also trim to a filing-date window.

Think of the filters as search aids, not separate databases. The public display is never the certified record.

Court Dockets: What They Show

Indiana names its official event history a Chronological Case Summary, or CCS. A Wells County court docket can list the case number, court, category, caption, parties, attorneys, filing date, status, dated events, hearing settings, financial data, and links to some public documents. Not every field shows up in every case. And read events with care. An entry means activity was recorded, not that an allegation is true or a motion was granted.

Case numberCounty, court, filing month, case type, and sequence.
Caption and partiesPublic names and roles, subject to access rules.
CCS eventsFilings, notices, hearings, orders, judgments, and later activity.
SettingsDate, time, location, judge, and hearing type when published.
DocumentsLinks only for document classes approved for remote public access.
DispositionThe recorded outcome, read separately from the original claim or charge.

The date an entry posts can lag the event itself. Corrections show up as new entries rather than silent deletions. Financial figures may leave out later interest, charges, or payments, so ask the clerk for an official current balance.

Three Wells Court Codes

Three trial-court identifiers are active in Wells County. 90C01 is Wells Circuit Court. 90D01 is Wells Superior Court, and 90H01 is Bluffton City Court. After the court code comes the filing year and month. Then a case-type code follows, then a six-digit sequence. MyCase often finds a number even without hyphens or leading zeroes.

CCS
The clerk's chronological index of case events.
Setting
A scheduled court event, not necessarily a trial or result.
Disposition
The recorded way a case or charge ended.
Continuance
An order moving a scheduled event to a later date.
Certified copy
A copy authenticated by the clerk for official use.

Felony codes today run F1 through F6. CM means misdemeanor, IF infraction, SC small claims, and EV eviction; estate codes include EM, ES, and EU. Indiana Administrative Rule 8 sets the statewide number format.

Wells County Courts and Their Dockets

Wells Circuit and Superior are both county courts of record. No simple criminal-versus-civil line splits their dockets. Local allocation rules steer the serious and related criminal causes to Circuit, along with probate, estates, guardianships, adoption, trust, juvenile, and mental-health matters. Superior handles the rest for the most part. Its docket includes stand-alone misdemeanors, county infractions, small claims, most evictions and protection orders. Designated civil, family, and traffic cases sit there too.

Ordinary appeals usually land in the Indiana Court of Appeals. A statutory trial de novo from a city-court judgment is filed with the county circuit-court clerk and assigned under the Wells plan. The official Wells Circuit Court source covers the court's own docket and calendar details.

Circuit or Superior in Wells

For conduct on or after July 1, 2014, a most-serious Level 5 felony or higher generally lands in Circuit. A plain misdemeanor not joined to a Circuit felony generally lands in Superior. When a new charge relates to a pending Circuit case, it follows that case, which can show up as a transfer event in the CCS. Check the cause history before assuming the first court still has it.

Civil filers can often designate Circuit or Superior themselves. Family cases follow special rules instead. A self-represented dissolution goes to Superior, and so do small claims. Most evictions and protection orders start there unless tied to a Circuit matter. Estates, guardianships, paternity, adoption, trusts, juvenile cases, and mental-health matters all go to Circuit.

Routing clue: The court code and newest transfer entry are more reliable than guessing from a broad label such as civil or family.

The Wells local rules spell out the allocation details. They also explain why two similar cases can sit in different courts when one is related to an existing cause.

Court Dates and Settings in Wells County

Start with paper. A printed citation, summons, notice, or the last order is the first place to find a hearing date. Then run the full case number through MyCase. Read the newest CCS setting there. A continuance can leave an older setting visible in the history. Labels like Initial Hearing, Status Conference, Dispositional Hearing, Final Motions Hearing, and Conference describe scheduled events, not outcomes.

Indiana CourtCal posts near-term calendars for participating courts. It shows the preceding seven days and next four weeks. Wells Circuit Court appears in the Wells selector; Wells Superior Court does not. So an empty CourtCal search never proves a Superior case has no hearing.

Call the proper clerk counter when a notice and the portal conflict. Call it too when a same-day change is possible. Wells local rule LR90-AR00-1 allows a failure-to-appear response in one situation. That is when a party or counsel is still absent fifteen minutes after a noticed setting begins. Staff can confirm logistics, though they cannot give legal advice.

Local rules bar recording and unauthorized photography in courtrooms and court areas. The clerk does not promise a public terminal, same-day certification, or walk-in document-image service for every record. Confirm those needs before you drive over. Docket Access Under Indiana Law

Indiana law starts from open access. Public access does not force every paper online, though. A public CCS can be visible while a single filing stays excluded, redacted, or available only through the clerk. Sealed, expunged, juvenile, and mental-health cases may be missing entirely, along with other protected matters. Protection-order and family records follow their own case-specific rules.

Key access rules:

Access Rule 1 sets the public-access and confidentiality framework.

Access Rule 4 presumes access unless another authority excludes a record.

Access Rule 5 identifies confidential cases, documents, and personal data.

Administrative Rule 9 governs remote calendars and compiled information.

Indiana Code 5-14-3 governs agency public-record requests, subject to court rules.

Rule 5 changed effective July 1, 2026. It demands care with personal identifiers and with protected witness or victim information. No general county records form can override a judicial sealing order or the specialized court-record rules.

When MyCase Has No Document

A case can show in MyCase while its complaint, motion, exhibit, or order carries no link. The gap may mean the filing was never converted to an online image. It may sit outside the document classes approved for remote viewing, or be confidential. It does not prove the item is nonexistent or sealed. Write down the court code, case number, CCS entry date, and event description. Then call or email the right clerk counter. Ask whether the item is public, as a plain or certified copy. Suite 201 accepts visits as well. A mailed written request can work when it describes the record in enough detail. But the clerk posts no single mail-payment, identification, or turnaround rule. Confirm terms before mailing originals. Fax numbers are published, yet Wells local rules do not allow pleadings or motions to be filed by fax. The county's general APRA form targets county departments. Send a court-record request to the clerk who maintains the case.

How the Clerk Keeps Docket Records

County Clerk Beth Davis is the elected Clerk of the Circuit Court. Her office runs clerk-side functions for both Wells county courts. Separate counters maintain the 90C01 and 90D01 files. The office receives filings, enters CCS events, collects costs, supplies copies, and answers certification questions. Bluffton City Court keeps its own city clerk counter for 90H01 matters. A docket or CCS is not every item behind it. A public online document is a chosen image released through MyCase. A clerk copy comes straight from the official file. A certified copy adds clerk authentication. A transcript is a court-reporter product with separate local rates. Tell the office which version you need.

What Wells Caseload Counts Mean

The 2024 Indiana court report counted 3,994 new filings, 3,773 dispositions, and 2,851 pending cases at year end across Wells courts. New filings split into 1,192 criminal, 1,160 civil-violation, 236 juvenile, and 1,406 civil matters. These are workload categories. They do not count unique people, rulings on the merits, or how soon a particular hearing will land.

3,994new 2024 filings
3,7732024 dispositions
2,851pending at year end

The 2025 weighted-caseload report measured 0.87 judicial-unit need for Circuit and 0.77 for Superior. The county utilization measure sits at 0.82. Those figures guide judicial resource planning. They say nothing about a live docket balance or the pace of one case. Wells County held 28,180 residents in the 2020 Census. An estimated 28,798 lived there in 2024. Population gives scale only. For an individual case, the live CCS is the right source.

Wells State and Federal Dockets

State trial-court cases in Indiana run through MyCase and the Wells clerk. Federal cases touching Wells County work differently. The county sits in the Fort Wayne Division of the United States District Court. That court serves the Northern District of Indiana. PACER handles federal case and document docket searches. CM/ECF is the federal filing system. Bankruptcy keeps its own Northern District docket. The official Northern District location source lists the division details.

City-by-City Court Dockets in Wells County

By 2020 Census ranking, Bluffton leads the five profiled incorporated communities. Then come Ossian, Markle, Zanesville, and Uniondale. Border-town figures cover whole places, not just Wells-only counts. Bluffton alone holds a separate active city-court code in the Indiana directory and MyCase list. Everyone else usually routes county trial-court matters through Circuit or Superior.

Markle Court Records

Markle crosses county context. Check whether the cause belongs in Wells or Huntington before choosing a clerk or court search.

Zanesville Court Records

No Indiana municipal docket page was located. Use Wells County sources and distinguish the town from Ohio search results.

Uniondale Court Records

No reliable current municipal court portal was found. Use MyCase, the Wells clerk, and the ticket's named court.

Bluffton City Court takes care of city traffic tickets and ordinance cases. A judgment there can get a fresh look through a trial de novo filed with the Wells County circuit-court clerk. Ossian, Markle, Zanesville, and Uniondale appear on no separate city court list for Indiana.
