Name-Based Case Searches
Begin at the official Indiana MyCase search and open the Name tab. Pick the court next. Choose Wells County for Circuit and Superior cases. Or pick Wells County - Bluffton City Court for the city docket. A person search takes last, first, and middle name plus birth date. A business or organization name goes in its own field.
- Enter the last name or business name, checking spelling against a notice or filing.
- Select the correct Wells court and limit the case family to Criminal & Citation, Civil, Family, or Probate when known.
- Add first name, birth date, status, or filing dates only as needed to narrow the result set.
- Open the likely result and compare the court, case number, caption, filing date, and parties.
MyCase also offers a sounds-like option for names. It helps when spellings vary, though it cannot be paired with a wildcard. Results cap at 1,000, so a search on a very common surname may push the case you want past the limit where you cannot see it.
| Field | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Last, First, Middle | Person name | Last name may stand alone; add fields to narrow |
| Birth Date | MM/DD/YYYY | Optional identity-matching filter |
| Business / organization | Text | Alternative to person-name fields |
| Sounds like | Checkbox | Alternate spelling search; not with wildcard |
Wells MyCase Filters in Order
The court selector does more than name a county. Its dropdown holds 162 choices. They span statewide groups, appellate courts, county courts, and participating local courts. Wells County and Wells County - Bluffton City Court sit on the list as separate choices. All Odyssey Courts only makes sense when you truly do not know which court holds the case.
Narrow by case family next. Criminal & Citation, Civil, Family, and Probate are filters, not separate databases. Advanced options add All, Open, or Closed status plus File Date From or To. A one-sided date range is allowed. The official MyCase search tips cover wildcards, sounds-like matching, case-number variants, and the result ceiling.
Case Number Searches
An exact cause number usually beats a name search in Wells County. The local patterns are 90C01-YYMM-CT-###### for Circuit, 90D01-YYMM-CT-###### for Superior, and 90H01-YYMM-CT-###### for Bluffton City Court. The 90 marks Wells County. C, D, or H names the court. YYMM gives the filing year and month. CT is the case-type code, and six digits form the sequence.
MyCase often accepts a cause number without hyphens or leading zeroes. Try the complete printed form first. Then test an allowed variant. A transferred case may surface through number history or a cross-reference. A wrong court code can send an exact search to the wrong court entirely.
Three Wells Identifier Searches
The Case tab offers three identifiers: a cause number, a citation, and a cross-reference. Use one at a time. Each can lead to the same case, but they are not interchangeable labels.
| Identifier | Best use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Case Number | Known Indiana cause number | Check 90C01, 90D01, or 90H01 |
| Citation Number | Ticket or citation in the court system | Formats vary; preserve leading zeroes first |
| Cross Reference | Old number or agency identifier | Field accepts up to 30 characters |
A ticket number search can fail when zeroes were dropped or the citation has not reached the court system yet. Try the exact printed form first. Then try the cause number if one has been assigned. A failed citation search does not mean no case exists.
Case Search Results Explained
A typical Wells County result names the court, cause number, case category, caption, filing date, status, parties, judge or judicial officer, and public attorney details. The Chronological Case Summary then lists events by date. Public orders or filings may show up as document links.
| Case header | Court, cause number, category, filing date, status, and caption. |
|---|---|
| Party block | Public party names and roles, subject to access rules. |
| CCS event | Entry date and brief event description, which may differ from the event date. |
| Setting | Public date, time, location, and hearing type when available. |
| Document link | A filing or order approved for online access, not a promise of a complete file. |
| Financial data | Amounts shown with a warning that later interest, costs, or payments may be absent. |
The CCS is an event index, not a transcript. One short entry may point to a far longer order. When no document link appears, the filing may still be public but not converted or not released online. Ask the Wells clerk instead of guessing from the blank link area.
Public, Party, and Attorney Views
Anonymous public MyCase access is generally free with no account. Heavy searching can trigger a CAPTCHA. Party access requires an Indiana Courts account plus a time-limited access code from MyCase or the clerk. It may show party documents the public cannot see. Attorney access adds a dashboard and case materials tied to representation.
None of these layers changes who keeps the official record. The Wells County Clerk maintains the Circuit and Superior clerk files. Bluffton City Court runs its own counter. The Indiana Electronic Filing System handles filing and service. It is not a second public docket-search site.
Two Ways to Search: County and State
Wells County has no separate local public docket database. Indiana Odyssey Public Access, through MyCase, serves as both the statewide search layer and the public online route for Wells cases. The court filter is the choice that matters.
| Wells-filtered search | Statewide search |
|---|---|
| Select Wells County or Bluffton City Court | Select All Odyssey Courts only when needed |
| Best for a known local cause or party | Best when the filing county is unknown |
| Reduces common-name matches | Can reach the 1,000-result cap quickly |
For hearing dates, the separate Wells County court schedule explains CourtCal coverage. CourtCal is not an alternate case-file search.
When a Wells Search Fails
When a search fails, check the basics first. Cover the court choice, spelling, status, case-family filter, and filing-date range. Run the exact cause number with and without permitted punctuation. For a name, drop extra fields or try a supported alternate spelling. For a ticket, keep its original zeroes and try the assigned cause number.
If the case still does not appear, the cause may be simple. It may predate conversion. It could carry another court code. Or it may be sealed or expunged, or belong to a confidential case type. Call the Circuit counter at (260) 824-6479 for 90C01 matters. Or use the Superior counter at (260) 824-6483 for 90D01 matters. Give the clerk what you have. That means the name, court, date range, and identifier. Routing questions can go by email to clerk@wellscounty.org.
Note: A missing public document link does not by itself mean the document is confidential.
Which Cases Stay Restricted
Indiana Access to Court Records Rule 4 starts from a simple premise. The default is openness. A Wells County court docket is public. Some other rule, statute, or order must say otherwise before that changes. Rule 5 is the main gatekeeper. It lists cases, documents, and personal details that stay out of view.
So some Wells County court records simply will not appear. Mental-health matters, sealed cases, and expunged cases may be missing or trimmed. So may certain juvenile and historic paternity matters. Even a case you can see may hide a filing. Medical, treatment, and substance-use records can all be withheld. So can custody-evaluation and protected-personal-information records, while the public CCS stays online. A records request cannot talk its way past Rule 5 or a sealing order. Ask the clerk about the process and the controlling authority rather than for legal advice.
Wells Attorney Docket Searches
Want to track one lawyer instead of one party? The Attorney tab gives you a focused Wells County docket search. Type a name or bar number. Pick Wells County. Then narrow by case family, status, or filing date if the list runs long.
Be clear about what this returns. An attorney search surfaces public cases tied to that lawyer. It does not open confidential documents. That requires an eligible account and a relationship to the case. And when you already hold a cause number, use it. The exact number is still the cleanest route to the CCS.
Field limits are generous. Names run up to forty characters, bar numbers up to twenty. Check the caption, court code, and filing date. Do that before trusting a hit as your Wells County case. Counsel may have entered or left recently. Read the CCS and appearance entries rather than assuming the result shows the full history.
Wells MyCase Search Screens
Indiana lays out its search options on one screen. The official MyCase search template presents the Case, Name, and Attorney paths that Wells County docket searches run through.

The form works exactly as described above. Pick one search mode, choose the Wells court, then apply case-family or advanced filters only when the first pass is too broad.
For the fine points, Indiana's official MyCase search tips cover case-number formats, name entry, wildcards, sounds-like matching, dates, and status limits.

The guidance makes the logic plain. An exact cause number beats a broad Wells County name search every time, so narrow any result list before you rely on it.
